Analogue gravity enables the study and recreation in the laboratory of phenomena connected with the propagation of classical and quantum fields on curved spacetimes. This allows experimental access to the interplay between wave propagation, curved spacetimes and quantum physics—a combination which normally eludes detection in gravitational systems. Examples include Hawking radiation from the event horizon of analogue black holes, rotational super-radiance off the ergosurface of rotating black holes, and the spontaneous emission of entangled pairs of particles in a rapidly expanding universe. A new phase has recently started in the field: technological advances have rendered the experimental implementation of many old and new theoretical ideas in a growing variety of platforms, ranging from classical hydrodynamics, quantum fluids, nonlinear optical fibers, graphene, etc. These are exciting times in which progress is driven by experiments.
This event has two goals: the training of the new generation of researchers and a discussion of the state of the art of different research programs and experimental platforms. The events will be held in the 'Centro de Ciencias de Benasque Pedro Pascual' and it is intended to stimulate the exchange of ideas between junior and senior scientists, with both theoretical and experimental expertise.
The Center provides facilities and an agreeable atmosphere to allow the participants to carry their work during the meeting.
Benasque is a beautiful mountain village located 1140 m above sea level, in a valley at the heart of the Pyrenees, about 140 km north of the city of Zaragoza. The beautiful landscapes, scenic hikes and the proximity to the highest peaks in the Pyrenees make Benasque one of the main tourist sites in the region.
The center is child friendly and families are welcome. The center does not offer day care, but can help families to find babysitters if requested.
The registration deadline for this even is March 15th 2023.
School
The school will take place from the 22nd to the 27th of May. It will include the following set of topics, which are intended to cover both the theoretical foundations of this filed of research as well as ongoing experimental implementations.
Topics
- From quantum field theory in curved spacetimes to analogue gravity, theoretical introduction
- Quantum information and analogue gravity, theoretical methods
- Analogue gravity with fluids of light, theory and experimental methods
- Analogue gravity with non-linear optical systems, theory and experimental methods
- Analogue gravity with atomic Bose Einstein Condensates, theory and numerical methods
Invited Lecturers
- Anthony Brady
- Luca Giacomelli
- Elisabeth Giacobino
- Friedrich Koenig
Dates
The participants are expected to arrive on Sunday May 21st, and a bus will be organized to facilitate the transport from the airport of Barcelona on that day. The School will finish on Saturday May 27th (no transportation to Barcelona will be provided by the organization at the end of the school; public transportation to Barcelona and other cities is available on Saturdays from Benasque).
The school is open to graduate students and postdocs. We have a limited number of places for the school. Priority will be given to students willing to participate in both the School and the Workshop.
Financial support
There are funds available to support the attendance of students to the school and the workshop, coming from the Julian Schwinger Foundation. Students interested in applying for funding support should send an email, by March 15, to agullo@lsu.edu with the following information:
-Name
-Institution
-Number of years in graduate school
-Expected year of graduation
-Research topic
-Name and email of supervisor
-Brief description of the student's motivation to attend the event, including the alignment with their Thesis
project
-Brief justification of the student's need of financial support to attend the event
-Has the student submitted an abstract?
Priority will be given to students attending both the school and the workshop, and to those with stronger financial needs. Decisions will be made by the organizing committee and will be communicated by March 25th.
Workshop
All interested in participating should fill out the application form (see registration section below)
The workshop will take place from the 29th of May to the 2nd of June. Participants of the workshop that do not participate in the School are expected to arrive on May 28th. A bus will be organized to facilitate the transport from the airport of Barcelona. The workshop will start the following day (May 29th), and finish on the evening of the 02nd June, and another bus will facilitate the return trip to Barcelona airport the next morning. Participants are encouraged to use these Buses, since there is no public transport to Benasque on Sundays.
All participants are encouraged to submit a title and abstract for an oral contribution. If the number of abstracts received surpasses the capacity of the workshop, a selection will be made by the organizing committee.
Invited Speakers
- Vladimir Eltsov
- Ruth Gregory
- Joerg Schmiedmayer
- Ralf Shuetzhold
- Chris Westbrook
Abstract submission
Abtract submission should be done through here.
* Abstracts files should be 1 page abstract in .pdf format
* The use of graphics in the abstract is optional.
* A complete editable abstract example and guidelines could be downloaded here.
* You have to be registered before abstract submission
If the number of abstracts received surpasses the capacity of the workshop, a selection will be made by the organizing committee.
